previous owner had 12/42 sprockets and they were shot.
also put on new o-ring chain, new is 39 links old one was 40links.

Sounds like the old ones were really loose. Sounds silly, but did you loosen the adjuster as far as it will go? I wonder if they didn't put larger sprockets on to add tension to a chain that was to long and/or worn out. Do you know what it takes stock? ALso where you at in NY? I am from the Rochester area.

turned the adjuster back as far as it would go, put the chain on the front sprocket first and only way I could get it on was to put chain on rear sproket and then bolt to axle with a lot of tugging and swearing. Its way to tight and I dont want to let my daughter ride it yet.
Iam over near Utica

Maybe your new chain is a link too short.

Yea sounds like you need to add a helf link. Or drop one tooth on the rear sprocket

If you have the 11 tooth front and 40 tooth rear standard sprockets then a 78 link(39 links as you said which is 78 individual links!) chain should fit with NO problems unless someone cut it short or you have other problems! This is the chain length called for on this model! OPT

so if my sprockets and chain are correct, i have rotated the axle to the loosest position, any other thoughts on what I may be doing wrong?
all the brackets holding tranny seem to be correct, and the machine worked fine before I changed sprockets. Also can I just add a link with out any issues?
Thanks
