1998 grizzly 600
#1
I recently bought a beat up 98 Grizzly 600, it has a lot of work needed. There are several things that has baffled me about this machine, because I normally ride Polaris'.
#1 Is there supposed to be oil, where my stator is located?
#2 When I try to start it, it hesitates and finally engages the starter or does nothing at all.
#3 A lot of oil is leaking from around the valve cover, is there a gasket of some kind I can buy for this?
#4 The pipes on the quad get cherry red, is this normal?

i have a 2001 grizzly 600 its the same thing just with a lot more aluminum to lighten it up. yes there is supposed to be oil where the stator is. about the starter i would check the gear on the flywheel, mine started doing the same thing an it needs a new flywheel as the gear is completely shorn off. the valve cover does have a gasket as far as i know it might be easier to use some red hightemp silicone on it and the pipes turning red is not normal it could have the wrong jets in the carb or somthing else could be wrong im not sure it also depends on how long they take to turn red.
if you get the bugs worked out of it its a very well built bike. i love mine and would ride it over my Hondas or a polaris any day also while your flywheel cover is off you should check your pickup coil with an ohm meter and you should pull the belt cover off and look for traces of oil as the oil seal behind the clutch tends to blow once and a while
if you need help checking the pickup coil just pm me and i can send you some instructions on how to do it
