1999 polaris sport 400 carb flooding out
#1
Hello I have a 1999 sport 400 just put a oil block off kit on and a single throttle cable also, it runs but is getting way to much gas! Fuel goes straight thru the carb when not running, I cleaned and checked the carb looks good. This bike seemed to be getting too much gas when I bought it fixed a bunch of other issues, now i have this one, any help would be great

Welcome to the forum! Replace the needle and seat and if the float arm and float arm pin are worn and wobbly replace them too.Plus a good idea to always turn the fuel valve off on the old 2 strokes. OPT

Thanks for your help! will do the needle n seat, float arm and pin seem good but the plunger underneath seems weak, float arm is not level when upside down, should it be?, is this adjustable?. The floats float when the bowl is full. This is my first polaris and its driving me crazy!!!

You can adjust the small float arm tang to where it is parallel with the carb body when carb is held upside down. This might solve the problem. If doesn't just replace the needle and seat. OPT

Thanks again, trying to find a rebuild kit , Im told that the scrambler and explorer kits of the same year will not fit, but the parts look identicle, any ideas where i can get a kit? Again this thing is driving me nuts!!!!!!!!!!!

You really only need this needle valve(needle and seat) #3130495 (3131385 is the newer replacement # )3130495 VALVE-NEEDLE,2.5 $32.75
Just an example of what the needle valve (needle and seat) fits! Difference in after market kits would be the main and pilot jets and you can clean and reuse the original ones in your carb. Moose and Sudco make good kits. Look on ebay or just google up Mose carb kits. Usually cheaper on the kits since most are the same price or lower than just a needle and seat from a dealer and you will have a new bowl gasket, etc along with the needle and seat. OPT

Thanks again for the info OPT, the part number really helped,(you should get paid for this stuff) new needle n seat ordered. On another note, Just acquired a 1987 polaris 250 trail boss sat in a barn for about 10 years, Story was that it needed a new top end, my buddy (who bought it), had it machined .40 over new piston and rings, starts right up but has a major noise and vibration from the bottom end, he is done with it, so i have another machine with issues!( just what I need) Anyway, Im assuming crank bearings, so I pulled the motor, both crank seals are leaking, you can feel some play in the bearing on the flywheel side, how does that all come apart, took the pull start off, thats where i am . Does the case behind the pull start pry apart to get to the flywheel? 2nd polaris driving me crazy too!!! Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Best to get a manual before you tackle this. You have three crank bearings, plus you might as well have a new rod kit installed(Hot Rods are about the cheapest and what I used the most of) Don't try to skimp by on the bottom end by just replacing crank bearings, especially on an old atv!!! Also the oil pump drive gear has to be heated and removed from the crank to get to the stator side crank bearing. Simple engine, but always helps to have the manual before you start tearing into something for the first time. You're wise to pull the engine before the bottom end takes the new piston out !! OPT

Ok all parts and manual ordered for the 250 Thanks agian! Just installed the needle and seat on my 1999 400 sport, starts right up, it improved the flooding issue somewhat, but still bogging like its still getting to much fuel, carbs clean, no air leaks, any other ideas would be great Thanks

Make sure the air filter's clean. Drop the slide needle one position at a time and see if if it helps on initial bogging. If it does worse, go the opposite way. Main jet shows to be a 230 good from sea level to about 3000 feet or so. Could have to experiment with jetting (down or up in size depending on your altitude) Premixing will have a different affect at times versus oil injection also. Plus doesn't happen very often, but check the reeds for any split, fraying, warped reed petals that could be the problem. OPT
