Chargeing? on an 08 sportsman 800 efi ho
#1
Has anyone had any issues with there wheeler not charging the battery? I thought it was my battery gone bad at first but the battery store told me it was good under load and it just needed a good slow charge for a couple hrs but after talking with them and my local polaris dealer they said I might have something going on in the charging system on the wheeler itself being an 08 sportsman 800. Has anyone else ran across this problem and if so what was the problem?

first thing you should do is test your bike while running to see what it is putting out for power. it should be around 13.5 volts at the battery when the bike is running.check the ecm connections to make sure it's not corroded or have a bad connection as well.

Probably the regulators faulty or a wiring issue. Look here under your model under "Electrical, sensors, switches" Browse Regulator's at the front of the atv. Make sure if any connections have come loose and that the battery connections are tight also. OPT

Is there a way to test the regulator to see if its good or bad?

IF the regulator/rectifier wires are connected and charging back to the battery is less than 13 volts with a known good battery, the best way is to test the stator wires to eliminated the stator as the problem. Just pull the yellow wires from the regulator/rectifier that lead to the stator.Test resistance between the yellow wires. Y1 to Y2,Y1 to Y3,Y2 to Y3 all should read 0.19 ohms resistance + or - 20%. Y1,Y2,and Y3 to ground should show infinity (no reading)
The AC voltage test is with the engine running at 1300 rpms: Should show 18 VAC between all yellow wires + or - 25%. If resistance and AC readings check out within range and charging is low(less than 13 volts) replace the regulator rectifier. This is from the manual, not me! I couldn't remember this if if I had to! That's why they make manuals,so you don't have to remember
