Water Pump Impeller
#1
I recently replaced my mechanical seal due to finding fluid around the weep hole, but I forgot to check how much free play the water pump impeller should have if any before I removed it.
If I tighten the nut all the way down the impeller won't move at all and I didn't think that was right.
My ranger 500 efi won't stop running hot after I replaced the seal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Jay

Welcome! The impeller torques to 7 foot pounds. If the impeller tries to turn a little as you torque it down it's ok! The impeller should be tight against the seal,NO slack! You have to jack the Ranger up from the drivers side and have it lean over with BOTH the front and rear tires off the ground and add coolant slowly as the engine warms up to aid in burping all the air from the long coolant hoses and engine! Just leave the cap off and as the fan cycles on and off the air will purge itself from the radiator. You may have to do this several times before you can finally top off the radiator and over flow bottle. Rangers will get hot very quickly if all the air isn't purged from the system. OPT

Yes Sir, you have answered my question. The down side is I now have to pull the water pump cover off again so that I can tighten down the impeller nut, but I can handle that. I'm just glad I know what the problem is now.
Thank you for the quick response and assistance, Jay
