guy is trying to sell it to me for $1800 and says it smokes. he said it was bad rings, is that expensive to fix? or is he even correct in what the cause is?

 

Your shopping used right? The 400 AT running perfect at $1800 is a flip of the coin. I buy used all the time,but I sure want the thing ready to ride when if gets home.

Tell the guy to get it running perfect or buy it for $800. At $1800 you just want to gas and go with a 400AT.

You can get a top end rebuild for around 500 and if the rest of the quad is in good shape I would say buy it.

I would never buy a rancher smoking expecting it to be just a top end. I bought my rancher used from a dealership with 48 hrs on it. Started smoking two weeks later. Turns out the previous owner sunk it. Changed oil and filter and traded it in. Dealership made it right and rebuilt top and bottom end at no charge. I've had it rebuilt twice since then. Because I sunk it of course. You can't sink a rancher and only replace the top end. It WILL smoke again

 

yeah, we decided to stick with polaris and got an amazing deal on a 2010 sportsman 500 ho touring edition... didnt like the power or the 4x4 on the honda haha
