Default Tested starter motor, worked, put it in, didnt work

Hey I have A Jetmoto 125cc atv and i got a starter motor and tested with some jumper cables and a car battery and it worked. But then when i put it in the atv it didnt work. when i hit the ignition button it sounded like it wanted to start but wouldn't. One more thing, its battery was dead so i hooked it up to a car batter y to start it, and when i hit the button the positive terminal started smoking a little. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

I checked all the connections on the harness and made sure they were tight, ive tried jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver. When i hit the button the solenoid clicks and the starter makes a small noise like it wants to work but it dosent

test the battery's voltage before you try to crank the engine. then while cranking the engine/starter, read what the voltage is on the battery. you could have a weak/dry cell and it's pulling it down and you don't have enough voltage to engage the solenoid's plates.

go to your local harbor freight or autoparts store, even a cheap $5 voltmeter/ohm meter will work. i buy mine at harbor freight for $3 and i got 6 of them so i'll always have one.....somewhere. haha. but anyways, you need to find out what the voltage draw on the battery is reading. that'll tell us a lot. part of troubleshooting.
