2006 Polaris Sportsman 90cc. (2 cycle) The starter was dragging,I took the starter off cleaned brushes lil grease and put back together. PROBLEM all the starter will do is spin. The starter is spinning but not engaging the flywheel/reduction gear?? I am at a loss.... The quad will start by the kick starter easily. I have noticed the kick starter does not spring back like it should?? What do I need to do?? Perry

Well I took the plastic cover off the left side(CVT side) Filter was stopped up,took the filter off and blew out DARN what a mess came out plastic bag shreds, etc. Must have been mice. Lubed the kick starter gear its acting ok now. Gonna have to pull the CVT cover and check out the other gears/flywheel. Not gonna be too easy wish the chinese engineers that used allen bolts had to take apart..........

Belt dust is the major cause of kick starters sticking. Good cleaning and lube as you've found out helps. A lot of the electric start problems are centered in the starter idle gear assembly.Along with dust and dirt accumulation(same as with the kick starter),chipped teeth on these soft gears seemed to be common problem. Wave washers also have to be replaced properly, the shaft greased a little and the idle gear free to move.Item#16 Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Cleaning belt dust from starter gears and k/s ratchet gears on the youth models is a maintenance that needs to be done every few years seems like. Surprising how dirty they can get. Glad that's all that was needed.
