Default Polaris 250cc pull start issue

I'm working on a '91 Polaris (I think it's a trail boss but all markings are gone so I'm not positive) 250cc 2 stroke. The problem I'm having is the recoil starter is not recoiling. I have pulled it apart thinking it was the recoil spring only to find not only does it not have one, it has no notches for one to be there. Is it supposed to have a recoil spring? If so, where is it supposed to be? If not, how does it recoil and how do I get it to opperate the way it is supposed to?

This a fairly complicated recoil because of all the parts involved. A manual is best to help you on the repair. If it's missing too many parts may be cheaper getting a new or used good one from Ebay(if you can find one) Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
Here's a pdf service manual that can be of help.http://gh-ftp.com/ORV%20Manuals/Pola...0All%20Models/

Thanks so much. The machine wasn't even trying to start using the pull start. My guess is it has bad compression, unfortunately I don't have a leak down tester and the guy I was trying to fix it for said he was trying to get it running for under $100. I told him that wasn't going to be possible with the problems it was having and some of the things I found. I think he's going to try to sell it on Craigslist for parts now, lol. Thanks again
