Default When to adjust valves?

I have a 04 Kodiak 450 that I am thinking needs the valves adjusted but was wondering if this is really the problem. It runs fine once it is cranked but it seems to need some throttle to crank well. I don't need to choke it at all even when cold. I seem to remember needing more choke to start it in years past. It also seems to idle rougher than in years past.
Is this typical for an engine that needs to have valves adjusted? Any other symptoms to look out for?
Thanks
Jed

I would not even think about it and just do it no matter.
This is a 450 Grizzly but its the same motor.

the biggest symptom of valves needing adjusted is hard starting and lack of power

When you say hard starting, do you mean spinning over but not firing or not spinning over? Just checking as my Kody has for to where it cranks fine when cold but won't crank when hot unless I give it some throttle. Could this be due to valves that need adjusting?
Thanks
