Read about some taking them apart and replacing resistors, etc, but not feasible for the average guy, especially on sealing the unit back up. You might contact these guys and see if they can help.Speedometer Repair
Plus here's what one poster did,but sealing it back would be a problem, plus being careful with the bezel:
"I just repaired my 2000 sportsman 500 today.
it had the NO LIGHTS, NO SPEED (needle), NO HOURS (digital), and NO MILEAGE (digital)issue.
The speedometer head comes apart by gently bending the metal brezel up, then the needle pulls straight up (note where you have it positioned)
there are 3 screws under the numbers, you need to peel the plastic label up carefully.
from there the back has 2 large black electrolitic capacitors and a 3 legged SRC transistor next to them. That transistor part needs replaced.
It is a Motorola TIP 48 voltage regulator.
Mine looked fine visuially and after much convincing I pulled it and replaced it and saved my self$ 250.00"

Just do the speedo by pass to get your awd to work. No way I would buy a new speedo for $300 even once let alone twice.
My speedo only has a working hour meter but the speedo is fine since the awd works its just the $80 wheel sensor(hall effect) is not working and even that I do not bother with. $80 buys a lot of gas.
Not like there is any useful info on the speedo anyways and surely not $300 worth.
Put the $300 towards nice tires.
By pass the speedo video.

Thanks...I cleaned things up ..the AWD works...thats all I care about....will just keep eye open on a cheap speedo ..not in a hurry...as long as AWD works...if that goes will do the AWD fix...thats a very poor design by polaris....

My dads 500 Sportsman (1997) has the cable operated speedo. That ATV rolled down a hill and smashed the whole headlight pod right off ,speedo and all yet the AWD still worked fine.
Polaris is known to fix things that are not broke , Like making weaker single plastic roller cage vs stronger dual metal roller cages and adding ECM brain box that can burn out without a moments notice like a light bulb.
