Default Viper Go Kart--Relay????

This Viper 110cc go kart has a relay between the key and the solenoid. The relay keep clicking and no juice to the solenoid, so i bypassed the relay and the go kart cranks fine. Any idea why this relay is there?

the solenoid on the starter could have been bad so the cheaper option to fix was just go to the local auto store and get a relay. I have done the same thing but i used a push button with a relay built in to by pass the stock solenoid

Well pretty much relays are there to reduce load and prevent a fire. The starter relay is there so the starter doesn't "stick on" when and if the battery gets to low. You see with a heavy draw like a stater as your voltage drops your amprage increases and generates a lot of heat. This could cause your solenoid to stick and even though you let go of the button it would stay engaged and continue to draw. Replace it or at the very least put an in line fuse in the bypass smaller than the wire that is used.
