The raptor saga continues............
#1
I have had my raptor at three dealerships this month to get the transmission looked at. Second gear went on an extended vacation. Finally I found a dealer that would actually tear it down and look at it. It appears that when second had its little moment, parts went through all moving parts of the tranny and engine. A tooth lodged between the cyinder and piston. The mechanic said that the head is the only part not destroyed. If it was not under warranty, the PARTS would be 3 to 4 THOUSAND DOLLARS. And it sounds like yamaha is going to have him rebuild it. It seems that, a new motor would be cheaper dosent it?
P.S. if you blow a tranny after warranty hit the off button now!

Hey, that's great!! After Yamaha pays the dealers to rebuild 200-300 of them, maybe they'll start thinking about having a recall and put quality tranny parts in it to start with. Your situation is the exact reason that I bought the extended warranty just before my standard one ran out.

Ditto...
I talked with 2 dealers and they are denying the tranny problem. One told me it's because everyone is change the gearing ratio with different sprokets... thats lame!
How'd tranny parts get in the cylinder? How long did you ride with chunks..
Another helpful hint - If blown tranny take the chain off to tow back. Even with engine off and in netural gears are still spinning around inside the case

Oh my... That hurts.. The only thing that I can think of and I have no idea if it would work is:
Track down the history of the motor design that they used for the raptor (if they used one) they usually use old designs and modify some parts, but for the most part they are the same. They did that for the banshee and blaster, they are old streetbike engines. (I think there have been conversations about this on here before, you might want to search)
If that worked then try to track down an engine on ebay or something, post a wanted ad or whatever, then you get the parts and it costs you $1,000 + $300 labor ($150 tear down x2)
But thats a little much... if you have the money buy a new one and keep your old one for parts or sell it, if its going to cost that much to get it fixed and then reliability will be a question, I'd spring for the new one, then you know.

Yes, I too bought the extended warranty, but the above post makes a good point. Can the Yamaha extended warranty on the tranny get voided by me putting a 12tooth sprocket on it?

The following is a usless rambling:
I wonder if the cases are the same? I also wonder if the transmission has an extra gear instead of reverse?? If it did that could have great potential, put the tranny from the old one into the new one and bang, you got another gear! (of course you dont have reverse) But it would be worth it for another higher gear!
Anyways like I said this is just a usless rambling...
