sportsman front spring preload adjuster question?
#1
I picked up a set of spring preload adjusters for the front of my 06 500 sportsman.i wanna raise the front another inch 2 sit at the height I want it to.i see some people make pvc spacers or use these.i don't want to make it stiffer or lose more upward suspension travel.i do have 800 springs on it already and over the years are sagging a little making the camber off.does anybody switch 2 a longer cartridge or slide it up a little in the strut housing to compensate?it seems like just a spacer is going to make the spring compress more adding more preload or the strut will be over extending causing the wheels 2 come off the ground at times they shouldnt

You can raise the cartridge up a little if you wish to help compensate, but don't go more than a couple inches and certainly not past the lower strut bolt plus make sure both sides are even. I've raised them up before for people. If that doesn't help I'd invest in some new ones.

the only way to bring it up is with stiffer springs or spacers. The strut itself does not support one bit of the ATV's weight. There is zero compression resistance on these struts, only rebound, so sliding them up or using longer ones wont help. If you put spacers in and you lift 1" like you want, you still have the same spring rate, just more preload on them, so it doesnt really ride any stiffer. I have done it a couple times and they ride night and day better, especially when cornering. i went 1.5"

Sliding the cartridge up helps for camber offset a little as he mentioned he wanted. This I've done dozens of times for customers.. Yes if it doesn't help enough then spacers, new springs or strut catridges would be the answer.

Polaris, Moose, and tm2 all made adjustable spacers. I think they quit making them but all 3 are still available. I cnecked the links.they look similar to each other like the Polaris oem ones I found.i cant really tell what they anchor to,the strut or the cartridge.does that style just lock in three different settings?the ones I have sit on top of the struts and lock onto them with set screws.its solid tubular with threads and 2 spanner nuts to adjust height.

I read about them somewhere and it said they only have 3 positions. It was either 0", 1/2", 1" or else it was 0", 1", and 2". It was a long time ago and I can't remember which. Maybe someone here has actually used them and will know for sure.
