This past Friday I took my new 400 Scrambler for it's first extended ride. After cleaning it up Saturday I removed the Air filter to see how dirty it was. I'm not overly enthused with the setup, as it appears easy to knock dirt into the clean side of the air box. I noticed there was dirt in my carb intake and it wasn't from me knocking it in. It looked like mud because it had mixed with the fuel. This inside of the filter was lightly coated with dirt. The only problem I can think of was lack of lube around the sealing edges of the filter. I’ve called my dealer and I’m taking it in this week. Anybody out there have a similar experience?
Scott.

always grease the filter ends on all dirt bikes or quads.

Buy a better filter.

I have 2 Uni's. So in total I have 3 including the stock.

The Uni Filters have 3 layers of foam, instead of the stock one layer of foam and one layer of paper.

I tried both and found that the Uni traps dirt all over. For $30 each, it is probably the best insurance you can buy.

I would recommend the Uni for the Scrambler, and just watch your jetting. I haven't had to rejet yet, and the bike runs just fine.

You definately want the dealer to know that the dirt is past the filter in case of any premature failure.

In case anybody was wondering the outcome. The culprit was a loose carb boot. Not properly tightened from the factory and missed by the dealer during setup. There was no sediment in my bowl (carb) and the compression check was good. There was dirt in my pilot and air jets. The dealer made note of this in case of premature engine failure. I have my Quad back and we put 50 miles on today. It seem to run great. I'm hoping this works out.
