Polaris hand winch questions
#1
Anyone use the Polaris hand winch that goes for 69.99? I mud allot but usually never alone. But I did get stuck once last year and some kind of winch device would have been great. would this work? or should I just break down and buy a electric winch? In 1800 miles I only would have needed a winch once , even then we did get it out, but it took two other atvs and 3 people.

Personally i would and do go with the electric winch. just think you need it and you are hurt Broken arm or whatever. Try to turn that handle now, aint gonna happen. But you sure could twist that switch and hook up a cable.plus it sure takes less energy on a hot day to use the electric then a crank winch.

i have the superwinch atv 2000 and a 4 ton come along plus extra chain and cable. if i can't get out with that stuff i shouldn't have been there in the first place! when i'm in my truck i carry two 2 two ton and the 4 ton come alongs plus chains and two pieces of 1/2 wire rope from a 25 ton crane, one is 15 foot and the other is 8 foot long. that's one of the reasons my friends and family nicknamed me heavy duty!

I carry both, a 2000 lb. winch and a 2-ton come-a-long. Both have come in very useful, the winches use is obvious the come-a-long on the other hand can help where a winch is useless. For example I was out hunting when I rolled the front left wheel up an unnoticed tree stump and by the time I realized what was going on my SP500 was laying on it's side and I was in a heap on the ground.
Now try lifting a 730-lb. quad laying on its side and down hill to-boot. Let me tell you it was an impossible task, for me anyway. My salvation was my come-a-long. I hooked the come-a-long to a tree and the other end to the high side floorboard and in no time it was back on its feet. On another occasion I ended up in some real bad muskeg with no way to winch forward but with my trusty come-a-long I was able to pull it backwards to dry land.

Go with a come-a-long and a electric winch. If you do any serious mudding and swamp your wheeler in a mud hole. If it dies and won't start, a electric winch won't do you that much good. That's when you can take out your trusty come-a-long The hand winch your talking about is only rated at 900#. It might seem like a lot but take in consideration the suction of the mud it just not be enough for the machine you have. I think they suggest a winch should be at least 1 1/2 times your vehicle weight. As mentioned a electric winch sures a lot less energy on those hot days or when you buried up to your handlebars and the wheeler is still running.I carry both a electric winch and a 4 ton come-a-long.
