Default 1995 Kodiak Oil Change

Hey everyone. I'm new to the ATV world and just purchased my first ATV, and I'm confused as to which way the oil filter goes in. It has a female end and a closed end. Does the female end face the engine or does it go in the other way? I can post pictures if need be. The filter is a KN-145.

Not the filter screen, but the oil filter itself which is located behind the shifter.

It sure is.

Looks like the closed end face outwards.

I thought all Yamahas had the spin on automotive type filters by 1995.

Apparently this one doesn't and that's why I found it so confusing. Thanks for your help, man.
