Default Oil in stator cavity

Working on a 2001 Scrambler 90. Had a no spark issue and traced that to a bad stator. When I pulled it apart, there was nasty black oil in the stator cavity and the stator itself was pretty coated in sludge. What is leaking in here? Is it a crank seal or the oil pump? I've searched all over online and have found no mention of this problem. I'm pretty certain this cavity should be dry, as it is not really sealed. Thanks.

You can eliminate at least the crank seal by replacing it since you're at that point any way.But if it's a large amount of oil I'd believe the pump body itself could be leaking or pump line.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

I think it is oil pump related as well. Should a guy just eliminate the pump and just mix the fuel? If so, what is the best way to do that? I've read a couple different ways. I will replace the crank seal as well. Thanks.

Pull the pump and you can check ebay on block off plates, have one made or do as one guy did by using a freeze plug if you want to do away with it. On the little ones.I'd premix 36/1 to start out with and see how it does. Some went to 32/1,might be too rich.Look at these old posts to get and idea.https://atvconnection.com/forums/kid...p-removal.html

Thanks for the info, OPT. I'm going to take the pump off and plug the hole. One more question for you: Is the $125 stator from Rickystator the way to go, or the $25 ebay one? I am of the mindset that you usually get what you pay for, but open to experienced advice. Thanks a bunch.

Only problem I ever had from Ricky Stator was on a 500 stator that a customer supplied that they had the pick up coil wires reversed in the connector. They sent one over night and we got him up and running. We did use them as we gave customers the option of oem or Rickys. Heard that some of the generic Chinese stators have given some people problems, plus like you say at times you get what you pay for. For 25 bucks might be worth a try though..
