I notice that every manual I see for a 96 sportsman is the newer body style. Mines the older style with the fixed headlight. Does it matter? Especially for wiring?

Shouldn't be any difference as it lists year model even though you have the older style body and head light. They had the newer body style on the the new 96 Sportsman 500. Mainly I believe just to set them apart.

This is the only example I could find but there should be more wires hooked up that aren't on here.

Ive got the wiring all back together except for 2 issues. There is 1 white/blue and 1 light purplecolored wire that i cant find where to hook up. I dont know if the light purple is considered purple but its not even close to the color of the 2 purple wires. My other issue is the idiot light wires--which color to which light. Any help appreciated! Thanks

Only white/blue wire that I can think of off hand goes to the ignition coil. Yellow goes to high beam indicator, purple to the reverse indicator(could be the lavender) Green/white to the neutral indicator,purple/black to the low oil light.Should have a small group of brown(ground wires that tie into the indicator lights also. If you still have problems just get the 5 buck manual with the wiring schematic. Can help you in many ways. DOWNLOAD 1996-1998 Polaris ATV Repair Manual ALL MODELS - Download ...

Thanks OPT! That ignition coil is the one I forgot about. I'm just gonna hook that light purple wire up to the purple cluster and see what it does.

On the dash lights, there is 4 grounds wired together but 5 lights. Do both of the wires off the oil tank go to the light to provide a ground?
