Strange speedo glitch ..
#1
Have seen a strange speedo glitch a few times now … 2004.5 Sportsman 500 HO ..
On occasion when at idle and I blip the throttle the speedo will reset. Bike keeps running and never misses a beat. Have seen it 6 or 7 times since I got the bike running.. Would that be a voltage regulator issue or CDI?
To get it running it needed a replacement pulsar coil,, only electrical issue I could find.
thanks

Check that battery connections are tight and it's charging around 14 volts back to the battery. If it is that should eliminate the regulator as a problem. If in doubt as to the battery condition just charge it up and have it load tested. This can tell real quick if the battery is ok or not.If all this checks out, could possibly be a gauge issue or even as simple as the speedo connector itself or a wiring pin that may have pulled out of the connector and making erratic contact causing it to reset.

Thanks again OPT, I have cleaned the terminals, but need to do more cleaning of power connections … I will also have the battery load tested (might be the cruel pit since if I let it sit more than a week it needs a trickle charge to crank). Have a little list of things left to do (ball joints, oil/filter change, solenoid) then this puppy will be 100%.
Have a great weekend
