I have a 2001 500 4X4 Scrambler that has painted steel rims. I guess they are steel, I put a magnet on them and it DID <correction> stick. My friend also tells me that aluminum usually isn't painted. There seems to be some debate on what Scrambler has what rim. Will I save a lot of weight off the rotating mass if I go to aluminum rims? Has anyone made the switch? Any noticeable difference? What brand is the best deal? Thanks!

I HAVE BEEN THINKING OF GETTING DOUGLAS .160 AL. FOR MY 01' SCRAM 500 4X4 FOR THE SAND. THE 160. ARE A MID-GRADE AND SINCE THEY WILL BE JUST FOR SAND IT WILL BE A LITTLE LESS WEIGHT FOR THE HEAVY MACHINE. IT SEEMS MOST PEOPLE GO WITH THE DOUGLAS WHEEL, IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT FOR TRAIL RIDING OR ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE SAND, I WOULD GET THE DOUGLAS .190 ITS A HEAVIER DUTY APPLICATION.

If the magnet doesn't stick...they are aluminum! Mine are the same. It must be cheaper to make painted aluminum than polished. I am sure they are aluminum because the grey paint scratched off and no rust. My Xplorer rims do rust when scratched...They are steel.

Ive been running Douglas 160's for over a year on mine here in the woods with no damage at all, The stockers looked like hell after about 3 weeks of minimal use, In short save yourself a little dough and go with the 160's you wont be disappionted they are easily ten times stronger than what was on it and only set me back $150

SORRY! What I meant to say was the magnet DID STICK. I proof read that twice to make sure I got it, but of course, I didn't.

Thanks for the correction. I'm just wondering how noticeable the difference is when you go to the aluminum rims. My brother-in-law tells me that I can possibly shave off 10 to 15 lbs. That seems like a lot off the rotating mass and it should be very noticeable - I think anyways.
