Default 86 moto4 200cc

So I'm trying to figure out if this atv is any good. I got it w carb in pieces and no gas tank. Engine turns over, seems like it has compression. I hooked up battery and can push button to start but no spark. Less than 1volt at coil w key on and engine turning over. Am I correct in thinking there should be 12volts from cdi unit to coil? With key on? Or just when turning over? Want to see if it will run on carb cleaner for a couple revs b4 I buy a bunch of parts, oh and I have blocked off intake quite a bit so if it starts it wont be at wot

You only get volts to the coil when the engine is turning on an AC ignition system, and there is no reason it should be 12v. I seem to recall about 7v AC on some bikes. I am not certain the old 200 was AC but most bikes were, until recently, and a lot still are.

take a screwdriver and jump the posts on the starter relay, see if there is any difference. Then ignition coil on ebay is like 10.00. I just got one for a 350 for under 10.00. I figured for 10 dollars vs, 35 years old part,,,, I'd get the new one! I'm just saying, Its not gonna hurt your pocket if it doesn't help. There is also the rectifier and see if there are any inline fuses anywhere.

Ok finally got the coil and had some time to work on it. Still no spark. Feel a bit sheepish cause I found where someone had replaced ground wire bolt to frame w a screw w bolt head and a rubber washer! Cleaned that mess up and voltage dropped ground wire, coil ground and 3 ground wires by headlight... All ok now but, now no voltage at coil wire at all. Guess I need to get a service manual. Do the moto4 service manuals have testing of cdi box, voltage readings, wiring diagrams etc?

Try a new coil or a second hand one off a skidoo or something it well work, your coil might be weak or cracked or it could be the power pack I have had that happen before running one min then gone the next

My brother's '86 200 Moto4 hasn't started off the electric start for years. It fires up on the first pull with the pull start. Have yo tried it with the pull start or is it like his '89 with electric start only?

Default Still no spark

Got the service manual and ohmed out pickup coil, spec is 196 ohms I get 125 ohms, wondering if this will make a no spark condition. Gonna try to look for ac voltage at pickup coil tonight when cranking.
