kodiak thoughts

Is the kodiak a good machine. I found a 350 moto4 4x2 not running and a kodiak 400 4x4 that runs. The kodiak is only $150 more.
Just never really looked at the kodiak before. I am not sure of the year on either machine.
thanks for any advice

Yeah, get the Kodiak. If they were both in the same condition, the extra power and 4x4 would be worth a lot more than $150. Some of the older Kodiak models had the semi-auto transmission just like the Big Bear and Moto4. I think in about 2000 was when the 400 got a cvt auto. Not sure what year selectible 4x4 was available in the Kodiak 400 but I think it was introduced along with the cvt 400 version. Yamaha had selectible 4x4 back when the Grizzly 600 came out in 1998. The Big Bear didn't get it until 2002 though.

That would have the air/ oil cooled 386cc which is the 350 motor stroked out. It will have a 5 speed foot shift with a super low 1st gear. The low range in the foot shift ended in 1993 I think and the 400 was not made then.
The Kodiak foot shift was the same as the Big Bear .
Later on in 2000 the 400 Kodiak was a 401cc ligiud cooled with a CVT tranny. Yours shold look like this 1998.
I never heard of a bad Yamaha utility ATV of and model or year.
Even if both ATVs are in the same shape the 4wd is well worth the extra $150.

Sell might not have everything together.
It has a oil cooler with a little fan up front.
Will know more tomorrow.

A Big Bear 400 4x4 would be another one to look at if you don't end up buying this one. Even one of the older Big Bear 350 4x4 models would be good too. You didn't mention how much they actually wanted for the Kodiak but I'm guessing around $1500 or so. A Wolverine 350 4x4 would be a bit more sporty option for around the same price.

Well believe it or not I am trading some old harley parts and $250. Not special on the harley stuff.
What is the big difference between the Kodiak and Big Bear. Sounds like the Kodiak got a auto trans when big gear stayed with the manual.

I can't see the difference between a Big Bear and air cooled Kodiak if you looked at the specs of them. It's like comparing a 350 Bruin and a 350 Grizzly.
They all have a oil cooler BTW. Even my 1989 Big Bear had one, only the 250s did not get one.
