27''VAMPIRES 4 GRIZZLY OR EXPLORER 400?
#2
The Explorer 400 rates 36 HP 2stroke style. The grizzly rates 32 4 stroke . The grizzly will have more grunt off the bottom being a 4 stroke the torque curve will be better suited to get the tires spinning . The 400 will surely turn the 27s only the RPMs will likly have to rev a little higher to get them rolling. The Explorers Higher HP makes it a little bit sportier and flickable and the revey nature of the 2stroke just makes it that much pepier. But for brute torque the Grizzly will handle the big tires much better.

I don't know about the Grizzly, but I own a Scrambler 400 with concentric drive and shaft front drive, and the Polaris AWD system is very good in the mud on this quad. I know the explorer is a different machine, but the engine and drivetrain are very close. I believe Kagey is correct though, the Grizzly will have gobs of low end torque and will hardly spit with 27" tires. The explorer will definitely have to get some rpm's going to move that much weight. One bit of advice though, I have the titan 489's on my Scrambler, and I just read a great article about titan's new 589 25" mud tire with 1"lugs, they said it performed as well as the 27" vampires or mudrunners, except for the less height. 2" less will equate to less weight so that might help with the Explorer. Hope this helps.
