Default 2001 rancher350 ES wont shift

Hi everyone, I bought a 2001 rancher350 es from craigslist. The machine was stuck in 2nd gear. After i got it home i tried to shift it manually but it wouldn't shift. I took the shift motor off and it will shift manually. Also with the shift motor out if i press the up or down button you can see the motor spin. I put it back together and same thing, wont shift with the buttons or manually. If you put your hand on the motor and press up or down you can feel the motor try to work.If you take the shift motor off you can shift manually. can anyone help please. Thanks

The shift motor and it's gears cause a lot of drag on the manual lever so it is a lot harder to shift with the motor connected, but you should be able to. Most problems are with the angle sensor, we just fit a new one and see if that cures it. If you don't want to spend money on a part you may not need, try stripping the motor and checking for oil contamination, loose magnets and worn brushes. The motor is a pig to get back together though. I did a 420 yesterday, and it turned out to be a stuck brush.

Thanks for replying back, I got a new angle sensor ordered, I did take apart the motor and cleaned it up, it was a little dirty. Your right it is a pain to put back together. Someone told me it might be the shift drum, what do you think about that? That looks like a pain to replace. Thanks again

They usually don't change with the emergency lever if there is a selector problem. This is almost always the star wheel loose, or the pawl that moves the star wheel round, or the lever that moves the pawl, rather than anything wrong with the drum.
