Exclamation 1996 Polaris xploreer 300 4x4 multi problems

Ok I just bought this four wheeler yesterday. On the test run it seamed to be running a bit rich but was nothing I thought would be a problem. As you probably know, it's a 2 stroke it has a separate tank for the 2 cycle oil. I believe the mixture is too strong because the bike smokes badly. Also it's idling to high, when I try to idel down on the side of the carb it kills engine and I have to choke start it every time even when engine is warm. Also I just noticed the 4 x 4 isn't engaging. If anyone else's has had this problem hopefully you can save me weeks of work figuring it out on my own. Any ideas?

Just install a carb kit as cheap as they are to eliminate any carb problem. Needle and seats were prone to excessive wear on the 300/350/400 machines because of vibration. It will smoke no matter what! Some of the smoke may be an accumulation of oil in the exhaust over the years, plus running rich (carb wise) can make someone think that it's oiling too much also from excess fuel burning.Shindy Carburetor Carb Rebuild Repair Kit Polaris 300 Xplorer Xpress 03 402 | eBay The awd is electro/ mechanical, meaning you have to have 12 volts to the coils in the struts, the armature plates slows down the hilliard allowing it to lock into the hub when the rear wheel slips. Both electrical and mechanical items work hand in hand. You can change hub fluid first and see if it helps. Plus in gear the awd light should engage. If it doesn't,then could be a switch problem in the gear shifter assy. Best to have a manual on this to acquaint yourself with this machine and the manual will pay for itself many times over in service and repairs..http://visit.tradebit.com/visit.php/...75/264163234/9

Thank you for the manual link, I was just searching for this. I paid the ten bucks and its saving to my drop box now so I can access it on all my devices. I did find one other problem. When I get up to around 30 mph the front wheels shake badly. I got off the bike and looked under the front and the wheel baring boot cover is all smashed up. Not seeing any grease or anything though. I'm thinking that baring is bad.

also the guy I bought the bike from said its been setting in his garage for 2 years, I have drained the tank and put fresh gas in. But I bet if I drop the bowl on carb I'm going to find a build up from the ethonal, just a hunch though, haven't tore into it yet wanted to get an idea of what I was getting into first. If you guys don't mind I'm going to post each step I take starting tomorrow on fixing the problem. That way you guys can tell me if I am messing up or not lol. And hopefully It will help others.

Along with the manual this will help you on the carb. Sitting up with ethanol fuel,I can just imagine what the carb may look like.

Its kinda hard to see in picture I guess, but the housing that hold the air filter, going to carb is busted right behind the clamp. I'm guessing that's allowing to much air, which I'm betting is causing my problem

Common problem on air box necks to crack from vibration allowing in dirt on all the older two strokes. Either repair the box with JB weld as some have done to patch them up or pay $64 for a new one.http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...96&fveh=286162 You can try ebay also, but hard to really find a good used one that they don't want high dollar for it. All the more reason to get the carb kit and check compression while you're at it also. Dirt right into the intake is never good on a piston.

Yes I have a carb rebuild kit ordered, hopefully it will be here by the weekend. Amazon is were I do most of my shopping. Had a few bad experiences with ebay either not getting my item at all or getting something much different than it was described. So I will flint stone it with duct tape before I order anything from ebay ever again lol
