Default Auxiliary cooler - 2001 Kodiak 400/Grizzly 600

I've got a 2001 Kodiak 400 and a 2001 Grizzly 600. . .we've had them for several years and have never had any problems with them. . .whether trail riding (for hours) or using them around the farm. . .until now that is.

We just got a new tow behind rough-cut trail mower (a 44" deck Swisher rough-cut trail motor with a 14.5 HP electric start B&S engine in case anyone wants that info). Both quads over heat after about an hour and a half of mowing. . .it's a 2.5 acre plot, but I'm only mowing about 1-1.25 acres of it. It's pretty level, only one steep slope, but that is downhill mowed only and I don't drive up the slope at all. it's just grass. . .a little thick in one place, but no real brush cutting.

The speeds are quite a bit slower than our normal use (mowing speed is

Are you sure the fans are coming on? Here's a suggestion, if they are both automatics, buy an old Honda or Arctic Cat manual shift model for that type of work. If yours are manual shift, then forget my suggestion, but, my experience owning both automatics and manual shift models, the manuals generate a lot less heat. My 2001 AC 500 never gets over 170F towing out logs. Haven't used my AC400 manual shift for that type of work, but it runs very cool. If coolant it up to right level, water pump working, radiator fins clean and fan/thermostat working, maybe, try an old manual shift model for work. BTW, 7,000 trouble free miles on my AC, you might like the 10 speeds fwd, 2 speeds reverse control. Perhaps a snorkel might help?

They are both manual. . .I haven't verified the fans are coming on; I was going to double check them when I mow this weekend.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The hour and half leads me to think it's not the fans, but you may just be pushing the stock cooling system to the max. Perhaps try an additive for the coolant like "Cool It" or Evans Waterless" Check out what guys who drag race use. That might be all you need.

The 600 cannot be a manual, must be an auto and a belt drive.....and the Kodiaks that I have seen are belt driven as well...auto. The Kodiak is liquid cooled, the 600 is oil cooled. Anyway, if the fans are working, then the very slow speeds along with pulling the mower may be "taxing" the cooling systems. Both the Kodiak and the Grizzly cooling systems can be upgraded.
