400ex for Trail Riding

I am looking to buy a 400ex. I was interested in a 300ex but i don't think it would be fast enough on the open road. Would a 400ex be ok for trials? I would be riding on trails with a little mud and some steep hills. How does a 400ex hillclimb? Also i don't care that is does not have reverse.

The 400EX is a great trail quad, but I never heard of them being used for trials, lol. Compared to other quads it's a great climber, but compared to two wheelers it sucks out loud. I should have reminded myself of this before I went riding yesterday. Now I get to buy a new A-arm, steering stem, handle bar, throtle cable, foot peg, front wheel, and maybe a spindle and hub. Crashing sucks, leave the really steep stuff to the guys on XR's.

If you want a trail quad and and open road speed go with the Polaris Sport or Scrambler 400. I know everyone is revved on the 400EX but it is not that great. I watched a GNCC race and there was a part where people had to go through some water and atleast 60% of the 400 EX drounded out and watched everyone else pass them. Hey it is your choice but I would ride nothing less than the caddy of POLARIS!!!!

I do not want a Polaris! I have had many bad experence's with them. And I don't want a auto

A stock 400ex Top speed is 64 mph,
Trail use is exelent,The 400 is very shiffty and ballenced at high speeds on trails but be weary of on coming trafic.I almost had a head on with a camo colored sportsman,they are verry hard to see.Going at 45mph down a tight trail I went into a full panic stop locked all wheels slid for about 30 feet unlocked all wheels turned at the last second straightened out and locked the wheels again sliding about one length past the sportsman.The 400ex being so light at 374 lbs makes it an exelent trail quad.
I have just instaled taller XCT holeshot tires with new rims I now have better ground clearence.And being six ply tires they ride like your on a rail,The rear tires being wider give better traction and mud crossing ability, Although you will get very mud covered, They through it everywhere.

As for climbing hills,The 400 has an exelent ability to climb and climb and climb even in stock form.I climbed five story coal piles easily,Although nervus the first time.After some time one the machine I was launching off the top of those piles in second gear.

You can't go wrong with buying a 400ex even in stock form.But when you mod it thats when it realy starts to shine,You will wonder why your friends can't keep up with you.

cory, altho I ride a Warrior. I think you'd be well satisfied with a 400ex. Of course, trail riding means different things to different people, and in different parts of the country, but for tight technical trails such as we have in Az, the Honda would be in it's element, especially if it had a pipe on it to wake up the power that it has in it. Gearing it up or down would be an option, depending on the type of terrain you ride & whether you require more low end torque or hi end, & that can easily be changed to meet conditions. The short wheelbase is ideal for jumps & really tight trails, so even tho I'm not a big fan of the 400ex in its present state of development, I think you'd be happy with it.

I talked with a guy a couple of weeks ago who owns a 400EX. He said when he bought it he figured it would be OK on trails. Anyway he took it to Wayne National Forest here in Ohio and said it really impressed him. He was really happy with the 400EX on the trails and was kinda happy he got rid of his untrustable ( he said it) Banshee.
I do agrain with Talon though the Scrambler 400 is an awesome trail machine. But I understand the EX is a great trail ride on it's own way. Just though I'd pass along a positive note.

Buy the 400EX.

It is a sweet machine.

Lots of power. Awesome handling. Great jumper. Reliable.

And that's stock!

Ton's of mods. Looks great.

It is a smooth machine.

I have ridden a 400 Scrambler, LT250R, TRX250R, 300EX, and Banshee.

It is a close call between a modified TRX250R and the 400EX. This is in the trails. In the sand, I have to give the Banshee the edge.

Get the 400EX. You will not be dissapointed.
