Default TaoTao overheating

My sons ATV keeps over heating. We've only had it about 2months. It happens when he rides hard or if you leave it in Neutral and and hold Full Throttle for about 60sec. It will die and wont start for another 5min or so when it cools down.

overheating usually a lean condition?
plugged exhaust?
brake/chain dragging?

What year and model?

Its a TaoTao125H i believe. 2016 model. I dont think the carb is adjustable so im not sure how to check if its running lean. If the exhaust is plug, i guess i can unbolt it from the head and see what happens. I dont think its a brake/chain issues because it overheats in neutral when you hold down the throttle for about 60sec.

Any air cooled engine will over heat if you are sitting still with the throttle pinned for a min.. They need air flow to cool. Since this is a 3 speed model is he in the proper gear for the speed he is going? Not in first or second with it pinned trying to go faster?
Pull the spark plug and check the color.
What is the oil level like? Did you dump the shipping oil? Its also probably due for a oil change. For the first few oil changes they should be done every few hours of riding to get all the material from brake in out of the machine since these do not use a oil filter. I run synthetic in mine

It's a CVT model so it chooses its own gear. I have Amsoil ATV full synthetic in it. I changed the oil yesterday and it's still happening. I did the mod to pull the safety cap and adjust the air/fuel mixture but it still overheats.

You must have the model # wrong. The 125H only comes in a semi auto. The tao tao atvs the sport models are semi auto and the utility machines are auto.

Have you checked the air filter and cleaned it? whats the plug look like?

It sounds more like a component is over heating and then works again after it sits and cools . I had a ignition coil do that, a stator can also do it.
It's hard to over heat a air cooled motor. I have one and had a few and I never had one over heat even if it sat and idled all day long on a hot summer's day.

Where do you live? Elevation and proper jetting is key too.

I live in Canada on the Border with Sault Ste Marie Michigan. I live in Sault ste Marie Ontario both cities have the same name for some reason.

We are in a 88 degree/31c heat wave currently. If my 350 Grizzly was idling in the sun it would run out of gas before over heating was a issue just like a air cooled generator would. Same with my old 250 moto4 and 350 Big Bear .
The moto4 did not have a oil cooler and the Big Bear had no fan on it,s oil cooler .

sounds electrical to me...air cooled machines loose power as they get hot...ask any motorcycle rider, but they don't shut off (normally)...an electrical issue will most certainly shut it down...
