I have a 98 Sport 400.

Can I put a high wattage lightbuld in the headlight without damaging anything?

Will it actually be brighter and can the stock electrical system handle it?

What wattage is the best?

How about those new "Blue / White" Lights. Do they work any better than the stock?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Rob,

You should be pretty safe with an H-3 bulb in the 100 watt range. Right now I'm running 2-55 watt projection lights and am not having any problems. I have a 100 watt light in the Trailblazer and have never had a problem with it. The best news is it will only run you about $5 to get a lot more light.

I've run the 55 watt diamond blue bulb in my Trailblazer and really thought that it wasn't worth the $18 price tag. It seemed brighter to look at, but as far as light output is wasn't worth it.

Mike, Thanks for the info. I went out and bought a $6.00 100w bulb. Before I put it in, I was wondering if the increased heat might damage or melt any of the plastic, wire or light housing. Also, does the 100w bulb go dim when the Quad is idling or can the charging system handle it?

As before, you seem to be one of the most knowledgable, experienced Polaris owners I have seen on the ATV.com. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Sorry Rob,

I got into messing with this new computer I have and some joker E-mailed me a virus. Good thing I didn't have much on it at the time. I had to reformat the whole thing. So I've been busy lately.

There are no problems with melting or dimming. I wouldn't let the quad idle too long or sit with the light on and the motor not running, because as we all know the Polaris alternator doesn't charge the battery at idle and the higher wattage bulb will drain the battery faster.

I haven't had anything go wrong in the past except the time my bulb blew out on the Sport. I failed to make sure that the water proof seal on the back was completely waterproof.
Hope this helps!
