Default 1996 300 4x4 odometer cable question

I just bought a 1996 300 4x4. There is a cable coming out of the left side of the engine for an odometer. The odometer is no longer there, just the cable.

My question is can I just cut off the cable to get it out of my way? Is there a better way to disconnect it from the engine without creating any other issues? The cable looks factory but how an odometer would mount on the dash does not.

Thanx

I think that if you unscrew the cable from it's little drive box on the transfer gearbox, you don't get leaks. Those mechanical speedos never worked very well and are broken on most of the late 300s we service. Many have the speedo removed and the cable tucked under the front plastic. The speedo mount was a bit "wooly hat," an obvious afterthought from Honda.

I never even knew the 300 was available with a speedo. I had a 2wd one a few years ago(99 model) and it had no gages at all. Not even a fuel gage. I guess it was an option that most didn't pay extra for.

Probably UK specification. Fitted as standard on the last model 300 4WD, circa 96 onwards. The one with a cooling fan and plain coloured tank, (no grey and white stripes).

Merryman seems to be spot on. Mine is a 1996 and does have a cooling fan.
