It has a lot to do with your area. 8,000 miles is nothing if it was properly taken care of. I'd be more nervous with less hours and a higher average speed. If it spent it's life put-putting around a farm or a crazy guy took it mudding every day. My 2001 Arctic Cat 500 has over 8,500 miles, tight as heck, does not use a drop of oil. Ask how often they changed oil, coolant, diff lube, etc. If they give you a blank stare , walk. I't not worth more than 50% of the cost of a new one, probably 40%. Example, I bought my 2008 Arctic Cat 700 Diesel for $4,000 , last fall. New, they were around $8k. It only had 480 miles! Original tires were still mint. 1 other thing, check if there are any recalls , etc. My diesel had one on the front locking differential. Got the owner to take it in to the dealer for the recall and got a report on the bike from the dealer. Everything checked out, except a rear caliper was stuck. At least I knew what I got, fixing the caliper was a $20 part.

Which 500 are we talking about, foot shift Foreman 500, es Foreman 500 or Rubicon? It is a lot of miles but I've seen Hondas routinely go 15000 miles or more with regular maintenance. Still, it would have to be a good deal for me to buy something with that many miles on it. Like $2500 or less.

Should be OK. The pre 07 Foreman had a faulty gearbox, but Honda quietly did a mod that cured it, and 07 onwards are pretty reliable. Though I did have one that had worn through the jet needle in the carb today, this isn't the first 500 that I have had to fit a needle to.
