I picked up a pair of trail bosses this weekend for a little project. Both machines run, the 87 has a leaky carb and the 94 leaks a little 2 stroke oil somewhere down by the injection pump. I have a couple new carb kits in my tool box for the 250 motor but I see they don't go back to 87. The 94 I assume is probably a bad line somewhere that I need to just replace. It leaks very little. Aside for a good bath, both machines are pretty solid. The 94 needs a seat cover and both have nice clutch covers and no broken plastic or bent racks. Both have new front tires and decent rears. Are these 250's both physically the same? I'm hoping I can use the carb kit I have for it so I don't have to make a trip to the parts store. I know the 94 is a high and reverse only transmission but I see the 87 has a low gear. I was told by the gentleman that owned it that it is like a granny gear because he said it was very slow. The 87 was owned by the federal forestry service so it saw very limited use and the 94 was his wife's to putter around their few acres. Neither was trail ridden so I believe that's why they seem to be fairly straight.
The 87s were the first models we sold.. That pretty little Teal color Trail Boss we sold a lot of them to women. The husbands would buy a larger machine and buy this little pretty one for the wifey to keep them happy..
Are both engines pretty interchangeable for parts? I see on a package of crank seals I have, they list the 87 up to 2000 so the bottom end must be the same. I havent found much on carb kits yet. The couple I have sitting in my tool box say the fit back to 1990. Did the 87 use a different carb or was the jetting different? Or can I put the newer carb kit in it if it uses the same carb?
You are right about the women liking the teal one. No sooner than I had it unloaded at the campground, I had a few of the ladies asking what I intended to do with it once I had it cleaned up and ready to ride. Not my favorite color but I guess if it makes it sell faster to the girls, then I am all for it, lol.
The 250 Fugi engine didn't change much from the time it came out until it was discontinued. Simple engine.Engine parts were basically the same. Part numbers updated on seals, etc to ones used in later model engines.Just minor changes in the recoil and electrical system. What was different on this old first generation model was the gear shifter mounted on the gear case and the cable operated front drum brakes and rear caliper. And that giant gas and oil tank. Carbs were the basic Mikuni VM series round slide carb.Think it used the the VM 30 or 32 carb. Replacement carb part number on the 87 was the same as the 94 Trail Boss you have. 87 used a 50 pilot jet,145 main to the 94 a 40 pilot,145 main jet.
This older one definitely has juice brakes because it has a master cylinder on it. How would I find the year on this model? I peeked around a bit tonight looking for a tag on the engine but didn't find to much to point me to a year. I never owned one of these older models mainly because I thought the were homely looking but now that it has been sitting there for a bit, I might not mind adding it to the collection to let the kids ride around on, lol.
Look on the right frame down tube. Should be a "W86,87...." series number. The serial number is etched on the rear of this down tube.If the recoil sticker is still there for the engine number, the first two digits is the year model. Most get washed or worn away.
