1996vs2006 honda which one

am looking to buy a honda 250or 300 4 wheeler i know the 90s ones are bulletproof, never been around none newer than a 96 model, are they still made as good in the 2000-2006 range as the old ones was?
just wanting basic 2wd foot shift.

2000 was the last year of Trx300 here in the USA.350 Rancher 2wd here pretty tuff BUT not an Trx 300 by an long shot, Trx250 recon came out in mid summer in 1996 but Dated for 1997 there fun little quad not much for pulling or hauling heavy loads BUT real tuff ..

No question, the 300 is better than the 250, I suspect the reason the 300 got dropped in 2000 but the 250 is still in production has more to do with production costs than how good it is. The 300 wasn't perfect, most will have had new rear axles and diffs, but if the carb and electrics are right, the engine idles rock steady, starts first time, without choke, in all but sub zero conditions, and is dead smooth. The 250 isn't the best starter, the idle is lumpy and it vibrates through the handlebars like a jackhammer. It is quite reliable, and will "do the job," but the 300 does it better. 350 2WD bikes are good, very reliable if you check the oil level regularly, and a smooth engine, but it does need more choke to start, and doesn't have quite the "bullet proof feel" of a 300.
