My daughter has been bugging me for some time now about getting her own polaris to drive. She wanted a project her and I could work in to fix up. She was partial to a few trailblazers and trail bosses I had fixed up but found good homes for. My oldest daughter bought a clean 2002 trailblazer 250 from me last summer so now my youngest wants something similar. Put my feelers out for a trailblazer or trail boss but nothing really caught my eye. Yesterday I got a call about two scrambler 400 4x4's. The black one has a fresh top end with a wiseco piston. They guy ran a tank of gas through it that was premixed and then noticed a small bit of coolant dripping from one of the head bolts. He pulled the head and planned on doing another gasket but lost interest. I looked everything over. It has a new piston, cylinder looks fresh and the gasket looks like a cheap all ***** one that I always had issues with sealing. Checked the head for warpage and it looked good. I hope an OEM gasket will solve this but should anything be put on the head studs? I never use anything but some studs require a sealant since they go into cooling jackets. Never seen anything on these 400's that says they require it.
The white one needs front end work. The axle boot was bad on this one and had u joints out on the prop shaft. The guy tool it apart and left it. I have everything to put it back together but the guy said it would leak hub fluid when added. What seal would cause this? The seal on the hub or the strut seal?
My daughter bought the black one and I paid for the white one. 300 bucks a piece. She is gonna rip with hers and I will probably get mine running good and sell when the trails open. The white one came with another set of plastics too, and a bunch of other parts. Hopefully she keeps the two stroke bug in her like her old man, lol.
Gawd, more punishment.. No sealant or loctite, etc on the cylinder studs. As far a which seal could be leaking,it can be either one,the hub or the strut seal. A LOT easier to replace both at the same time and be done with it.No worse feeling to replace one seal and the other is leaking also, then you have tear back into it again to replace it. 300 bucks apiece? Not too shabby.. Good $$ on resale that you can use to buy some more to add to the herd..
I gathered up my parts I needed today. Went with a Cometic gasket set. The head gasket seemed to be better quality than the All ***** one that I took off. I will get it swapped out this weekend and fire it up.
I found the bearings and seals for the white one at my local NAPA. they could get the two bearings and seal for the hub and the two bearings and the seals for the strut. 50 bucks a side and a lifetime warranty. Guess I will go that route. A hundred dollar bill and the front end will be tight is well worth it to me.
Still trying to find that elusive 2000 up xplorer 250. Had a guy send me a pic of one tonight that he may sell. Needs some work on the starter but otherwise a clean machine. If I can get my daughter's all happy with there machines maybe it's time for the old man to get one he wants, lol.
Seals and bearings for 50 bucks a side, good price. Oem hub and strut seal would cost close to that. Yes the little Xplorer 250 was a good little machine but only made from 2000-2002. We sold everyone we could get our hands on. Simple engines, shaft drive front, chain rear drive. Farmers and ranchers loved them too.
