they don't make the 400 4by anymore. for a trail/mud quad i'd get the thumper, or if you want to make the 400 into something it's not (racer) then it may be better.

go trying the 400 2 stroke, you'll see yourself the "fun" factors between those 2...
the thumper need less maintenances, but if you're not happy with the performances, you'll never be happy unless you spend a lot of $$$$.

stock vs stock the 400 wins the 100 yard drag race, but the 200yard race the 500 wins, so take your pic.

If you are a speed demon, then I would go for the 400 2 stroke just because it requires less money to make it go FAAAST. If you prefer 4 strokes and do more putting around, then get the 500. You can still get a pipe for and clutch kit for the 500, but you won't notice as much gain from as you would the 2 stroke.

So, to sum it up, neither of the two are "better" overall. The question is, which one in particular is better for YOU.

Hello Hannah,

Alot depends on what you plan to do with the machine. I bought a 2002 Scrambler 400X 4x4. To be honest, I only bought it because it was blue like my son's Trailboss. I never intended to modify it, which you can do to make it fly. Personally, I don't like the two stroke of the 400. Don't like the noise, the smell or the way it ran. I do not know enough about them to make them run like a top, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. Any ways, I bought myself a 2002 Scrambler 500 4x4. I absolutely love to drive it. I much prefer the four stroke engine. It has plenty of power, which is good since I don't plan on modifying this one either. It does weigh a little more, something like 40-50 pounds(don't quote me on that), I could tell the difference when I got off one and got on the other. I wish someone would have steered me towards the 4 stroke first, I wouldn't have bought the two stroke. JUST MY PREFERENCE. Hope this helps. If you buy the 500, you will love it, I do.

The 400 4x4 is still available in the limited edition "X" model. The only way a 2 stroke has to be rebuilt every year is if you beat it to death 10 hours a day every day. Otherwise, it should last 5 or more years without any problems. I plan on putting a new piston and rings in mine every 5 years just as a precautionary measure to make sure I don't burn it up. If you ride a just a little on the weekends like most of us, it could last you 10 years or more before you would need to rebuild it. But chances are, you'll end up selling it by then. There is no more maintenance on a 400 than a 500. Instead of doing oil & filter changes, you just have to keep the oil tank full. Other than that, everything is pretty much equal. When/if you decide to put a new piston in, it is a fairly simple task that most with mechaiccal knowledge can handle. If you decide to pay someone to do it, it shouldn't cost that much. Personally, I'll never go back to a 4 stroke because they don't accelerate as fast as a 2 stroke, they don't sound as cool, and they don't smell as nice! That's just my preference though. As you can tell, I'm very satisfied with my 400.

I think you should buy the 400. I say this because my neighbor has the 500 and it doesn't compare with the 400. The 400 will take it in just about every type of riding. If you are looking for the machine which will give you the biggest rush when you hit the gas, get the 400. Or if you are just lookin to get around or have that 4 stroke, get the 500.
