500 Auto tranny noise
#1
I just made a deal to trade my 2000 Scrambler 500 4x4 for a 2001 AC 500 Auto.
The AC is in very good condition, except for the small dent in the bumper where the kid hit a tree. Has 204 miles on it, and still under warranty. He just wants a sportier quad.
I have heard that the AC has a QUIET transmission. Not this one. The kid (my buddy's son-in-law) said he rode three of them at the dealership, and they all sounded the same. I've never been around one before, so I don't know what they should sound like, but it's WAY louder than my Sportsman. Loud whining noise.
Any experienced AC guys have any thoughts on this ?
Thanks,
Dave

I have over 2K miles on my Auto and I don't have a whinning noise. I would remove the side cover and check the clutch shaft pilot bearing. I think he may have gotten some muddy water in the clutch area and didn't clean out the dirt.

i've had people tell me my autocat sounds like a snowmobile, well i've never heard a snowmobile so i cannot say any different. mine makes a kind of high pitch noise but it has always done that. to me it sounds like a turbocharger, and i like that. i think the autocats sound that way because when you have all that brute power trying to get out you are going to have a little noise. have you ever eaten 16 bean soup?? those beans are a great source of protein but you are going to make a lot of noise (and enemies) by eating them.

Sorry IndyDave, but mine does make a slight whinning sound. It has done this since it was new and after 2300 miles I just didn't hear it. Anyway I went out and removed the belt cover and did an inspection. It appears that the noise is coming from the belt cooling ribs and the clutch which is constantly engaged unlike the Polaris clutch which only engages when in gear. So I would say the noise you hear is normal.

Mudpig,
Do I know you ? Oh, yeah, isn't your real name DICK ?
BTW, it would have been a real good deal, except he didn't even know what year his A/C was when he bought it. Turns out it's a 2000. Or did you know that already ?
