Default 2006 Honda fourtrax 350 es shifting issue

Hi all,

I have a weird problem shifting my 350 fourtrax.

First off I had an issue with my neutral switch which caused my ATV not to start, after bypassing the switch to ground I can now start it.

The shifting problem I'm having is this, I can go through all the gears when the ATV is not moving but when a take off in first gear I can't shift into higher gears without the ATV coming to a stop first. Also it's not showing the gear on the display it only shows ---.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You have answered your own question. If the computer doesn't get a signal from the gear indicator to say it has changed gear, it will assume the change didn't work, and because the speedo is telling it that the bike is moving, it will fault code (the ---), next time you try to change gear.

The problem is you bypassed the neutral switch by grounding it so when you shift that same bypass you did is actually making the quad think its still in neutral.

Thanks for replying but I don't understand how I answered my own question...maybe I'm just a little slow. Lol

What would cause this problem? Would bypassing the neutral switch cause it?

thanks

I only ground it to start it with the electric start, after it is started I disconnect the ground from the neutral switch. By doing that will the quad still think its in neutal?

Thanks.

May try adjusting clutch when atv is moving sometimes the clutch could stick from not enough free play between clutches, or atv has had the wrong oil causing sticky clutch disc, also I would like mention above fix neutral switch issue..

The gearchange is done by computer, if it doesn't get the signals from the sensors, in this case the gear indicator, it will assume (correctly) a fault in the system, put up the --- (flashing on late models) to indicate a fault, and refuse to change gear again until you sort the problem, or re-set things by switching off.

The part that's confusing me is that it shifts fine at a stand still, just don't shift when moving. Is there some sort of rpm sensor that may cause this or what about the angle sensor....I don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks

As I wrote earlier, the computer uses the signals from the speedo sensor in it's gearchanges. I know this for certain, as I got a 420ES in that was fault coding and the speedo didn't work, checked, and found rodents had chewed through the speed sensor wires. Fixed the wires and the bike changed gear again.
