400's top out at approx. 65 m.p.h. (I've heard that disputed, but that's seems to be the general consensus) My brothers has been very reliable and he's fairly hard on it and not real great about maintenance. I don't have any experience with 500's. A 400ex will beat a stock 400 on top end in a drag race, although the 400 will take him off the line. A couple hundred in mods and the 400 will take the ex. The 400ex is more of a true "sport" atv compared to the 400 & 500 polaris. If you like mx tracks and jumping you probably want to lean towards the ex. But if you want 4 wheel drive, like more trail riding and technical riding, polaris may be your best choice. Just my 2 cents.....
