My Magnum backfires/ Help!
#1
My 1998 Magnum backfires. It usually happens
when I come to a stop after a fairly long
throttle run(couple of minutes) with out
a slowdown. Not full throttle, or anything wild, just cruising over stuff.
I have thought that the mixture setting in
the carb might be too rich???
Is it anything to worry about?

Evenson, the first thing you should try is changing the spark plug. Even though it is a four stroke, sometimes the spark plugs can be bad, especially if the engine is breaking in. If it's not that, then it could be what you said, the mixture setting is too rich. I don't know if it would be the pilot jet or main jet though, since it backfires at idle, right? But I think it's safe to say that if it's not the spark plug, it's a carburetion problem. I've been hearing more and more carburetion problems on Polaris quads lately. Seems weird.

Evanson ; The first thing you need to check is the throttle cable free play. The throttle has a saftey feature that will kill the engine in the event of a stuck throttle. If this gets out of adjustment it will cause the engine to backfire through the exhaust. I really wish I could explain it to you. If you have an owners manual it is explained in it. The switch is in the pod located on the handle bars the switch clearance has to be set at a certain distance for it to operate properly. I have loaned out my shop manual or I would try to tell you how to set it.

I am planning a maintainance session for
this machine, so will definetly change the
plug. I have the original manual, but not the
"supplement" that is reffered to in the manual that is specific for the magnum 425.
Thanks very much!
