My FX400 got on the dyno
#1
I got to get on a dynojet dyno Friday, May 4 with my #6 FX400, I ran it stock and peak horsepower was 38.2 @ 9,200 and stock peak torque was 23.4.
I had a pipe made for it, bought the computer diagnostic and programming tool and after about twenty runs on the dyno had the fuel right and horsepower was up anywhere from 3 to 4 between 5,000 an 9,000 RPM, right where it feels great. Peak was increased to 39.1 @ 9,200, but I didn't care, that midrange increase was 8%.
A new peak torque was 25.7 but again, I loved the minimum increase of 3 from 4,500 to 8,500 RPM, for 13% increase. Again, right where I wanted to feel it.I wish I had thought to get the amount of time it takes for fifth gear acceleration from say, 2,000 to redline to compare against my Raptor, which is still stock. Email me with any questions, comments, or rants @

Well, I don't think it's going to be for everyone, but I liked it.
It's pretty obvious that it's setup for MX from the factory - stiff suspension, stiff and narrow seat, 2 stroke powerband, etc... Closest thing I've felt to the powerband of a 250R out of a 4 stroke. Not as much bottom as my modified EX, but when the power comes on, it really comes on. Throttle response was excellent, free revving the thing gave me goose bumps (very fast free revving).
I only got to ride it in some sand trails in Little Sahara, but the rear soaked up the sand whoops better than my TCS rear on the EX - The owner had his TCS fronts from his 250R mounted on it for testing, so I don't know about the stock Ohlins fronts. The chassis felt a lot more rigid than my EX.
Overall the handling felt good, a little different, but good. It wasn't long before I started feeling comfortable and tearing up the trail. The throttle response is so quick that it would take some getting used to - you could end up with a whole lot more power than you wanted pretty easily in certain circumstances.
The engine is noisy, it has gear driven camshafts. The exhaust note was muted, but sounded good.
You'd probably want some shocks that were valved lighter if you weren't going to be spending much time on the track... I imagine the Ohlins are rebuildable/revalveable opposed to the junk fronts that come on an EX or a Raptor.

Bash,
I have not had a chance to get my Raptor on the dyno, I do have some dynojet charts for the Raptor with a full aftermarket exhaust system. stage 3 jet kit, and filter that was done by dynojet that had a peak horsepower of 42.

How trustworthy was the shop and dyno? If i'm not mistaken Cannondale was claiming 33 HP for the FX and why would they underrate it? thanks Cddcpa for the great report.

Dyno due change from on location to the next. At one shop my DS650 dyno at 42.9 HP at the next shop with no change to the quad 39.8 hp. There are so many variables that will affect the results. The only way to compare results is to due them on the same dyno at the same time.

They dyno'd it on a Superflow dyno... Most ATV readings you see are done on a Dynojet.
It is important to look at the numbers in context. Note the HP that they show for a 400EX, Raptor, and a DS650 for a perspective.
I believe the dyno run on Cannondale's website accurately portray's how the bikes compare against each other, myself - having ridden all but the DS.
