I have a little problem guys. My wife and I were doing some high-speed passes for the camera and on the last one the Scrambler just stopped running. My wife was most likely at about half throttle and it just quit.

I do not think it is a melt-down because I can still pull the starter recoil and it "feels" fine. The plug was a bit blackish so I changed it...nothing. The airfilter was a bit dirty but O.K. There was gas in the tank.

When hitting the electric start it sounds like there is no gas to ignite. What could this be? Carb blocked? I also noticed that there is a blackish dripping around/between the reed cage and the intake manifold to the motor.(outside) Is this just because of the premix?

Thanks

But wouldn't opening the gas cap have let enough air/pressure in/out to re-start the quad?

Start with the basics:
1. Do you have good compression?
2. Do you have a spark?
3. Do you have gas in the carb?
Answer these basic questions and you will be well on your way to finding your problem.

Follow Traildogs suggestion and check the basics 1st. If you're still running the stock piston you might find low compression is the problem. A new Wiseco will fix that. Hopefully it will be something much simpler than that though. It just sounds alot like what happened to mine when my piston bit the dust.

Xplor,

Another thought is the pickup tubes in the gas tank. I am not sure how they are implimented on the Xplorer. I had one fall off of my Sea-Doo such that it would only run on reserve (or vice-versa, I can't remember). The point is, it could be a fuel pickup issue in the tank. Try switching to reserve and see if it does anything. I have also heard of the fuel selector switch going bad. How about plugged fuel filter? Rare, but it happens.

In a situation like this I would check for spark first. You have changed the plug, but does there appear to be good spark? If not, it could be anything from the kill switch to the ignition key to the coil to ...

Here is a thought, did the kill switch get hit accidentally? I never use it on my Sportsman or Honda, I always use the key. If someone flicks it by accident it takes me a while to realize why things are dead.

Next I would see if it is a gas issue by manually putting a small amount of fuel in at the spark plug or directly through the carb. Crank it and see if it fires momentarily. If it does, this tells you that it is not getting fuel in the normal way. It also confirms the plug is firing.

Good luck, let us know the outcome.

DJ

A burn down will color the plug a dark grey with light silver specks on the plug nose and ground electrode. If that's what it looked like, it sounds like the dreaded "mid range burn down".
Mine shut off a couple of times before the hole went all the way through the piston, but it would restart without too much difficulty.
Check the basics and go from there.

Capt,

If I remember right, the plug was that color...$hit! But if I understand right this type of problem will not seize the piston?

$hit...I hope it ain't that! If so what do I do?? Just stick another weisco in and rejet richer on the needle?

MID RANGE BURN DOWN... $hit!

Compession is around 25 psi. The Scram is heading to the dealer tomorrow. I really do not feel like tearing her apart for a third time! I will definately get the jetting "spot-on" this time. I don't get it...I checked it about 5 times and it was always on the dark side?!?! I thought I was running safe!

No wonder it was was so fast!

Xplor, if you're having the dealer do it then do yourself a favor and have them put in a Wiseco or anything other than the stock piston.
Those stock pistons are crap and I can't believe the dealers turn right around and put them back in. Next year you'd have it back in the shop again.
