Did anyone actually test how much fuel a Sportsman 500's tank holds? It says the capacity is 5 1/4 gallons, but I don't know if this is necessarily accurate. When I put gas in the Sportsman once, (the fuel level was just above reserve) and I took a full 2 1/2 gallon can and it filled it up. I know the reserve doesn't make up the difference, so I am curious if anyone has actually measured it.

I've dumped better part of 5gallon can in mine several times.I figure I have a range of 110miles then better have gas handy. LATER COB

I recently bought gas gage/cap for my Y2K sp500 from the dealer. He looked up the part number and gave me the one listed. It wouldn't even screw onto the top of the tank. Took it back and he said "oh must be the other one, Polaris only makes two gas gages." Well, then second one did screw on to the top of the tank but the fit was not real good. It does screw on but not as easily as the original and as silly as this might sound seems to get tighter as I ride. It is then fairly difficult to get off. Anyway, when it got down to the reserve mark, I filled up and only put in about 2.5 gallons. Doesn't make sense. Anyone know if Polaris makes other gage caps?

When my mom bought her Sportsman in 97, they did not have a gas guage available for it. This was the only model that didn't have one available for it, along with the Xplorer 500. This is because the front of the tank slopes forward from the hole on top, so I would imagine they still don't have one available for the Sportsmans.

Our fuel gage on the Sportsman says "reserve" when we have about 3.5 gallons left. On my Srambler I had about 1.5 gallons left when it said resverse. Waste of money to me.
