I AM LOOKING INTO PURCHASING A USED 400EX I WILL ONLY GO BACK AS FAR AS 2000 YEAR WISE, WHEN BUYING A USED ONE, WHAT CAN YOU LOOK FOR TO SEE IF IT WAS BEET AND OR NOT MAINTAINED (NEED TIPS)THANKS

Check the airbox, is it clean? Look for oil leaks, are there any? Stand it on it's grab bar. Are there any major cracks in the frame, or is there any major body damage? Does it have race cut plastic? If it does, then you can bet its been abused in some way. Listen to the motor. Just a few to get started.

 

Never buy it wiht out riding it. Go though the gears. Check the oil and air filter. THis might show how they take care of the quad. If the oil is too low i would not buy it. Check make sure the axle or hubs are loose. If your a wrenching kinda person just negotiate all the "flaws into the price"

 

Take a long look at the frame near the front shock mounts. A friend of mine broke the frame there. Check for cracks and rust.
