I know some aftermarket company makes a 6th gear for the 300ex for $800. I havn't heard anything for the 400 tho. I don't think the r matches up either.

Honda removed it because the starter took up the room that was occupied by 6th gear on the XR, and also made each gear a little fatter (and stronger).

Probably the cheapest option would be to replace your TRX engine with the XR engine. The only downside to this would be the comparatively weaker tranny of the XR, and a way to fit the kicker in (you'd probably have to remove the plastic to start the bike).

Why not just build the TRX engine for more HP, and gear it higher?

I think if you got the XR engine you could buy the 250x/300ex rear fender/seat assembly with the kickstart mold and make it fit the 400ex frame.

The XR kicks backward, like all motorcycles, so it runs right into the plastic on an ATV. That's why Honda always has their ATV's kick forward.

Nope, but becuase of the added gription of the two atv tires (compared to the single, skinny dirt bike tire), an ATV tranny is normally required to be stronger.

Yes this is possible. DOn't know the price, but any shop like Nacs, Denton or TC Racing can hook you up. You just loose neutral....

From what I understand, the XR does not have a weak tranny. The XR tranny is designed to only move a narrow dirt bike tire....Where as the quad tranny is designed to move two MUCH larger contact patches...this requires a heavier duty tranny as compared to a dirt bike. XR tranny would not last very long setup as a quad tranny...

<EDIT>: Opps...I see Pam already answered the XR question...my bad!
