Slight Problem-Dumb question, but where are the clips???

OK, I've got the main jet in-you guys were right, it was a piece of cake, and as Minehunter said a while back "any 5 year old with screwdriver know-how can do it". Sorry I made such a big deal of getting nervous messing with it-no problem!
Now, I do have another little problem though-I pulled the top 4 screws out of the brass looking dome shaped top piece. Three came out OK, but kinda tight. The fourth striped out the minute I put any pressure on it. After a run-in the the pliars and pipe wrench, finally the vice grips had to come to the rescue to get that pesky little runt out-it's torn to hell now, as you would imagine, but should work till I can get a new one. My problem is, that once I pulled that top brass dome thing off, there was that main long loose coiled spring, as you said there would be. Inside that spring was a white plastic "claw" looking thing that goes about an inch up inside the spring (I'm guessing about 1/2"-5/8" in I.D.). Anyway, this assembly drops down into another "dome" shaped piece that dips downward, is made of a really thin rubbery material. I pulled it out, expecting to find the "clip" to adjust for the needle, but did not see it anywhere.
That rubber dish thing is attached to a long metal projectile that looks similar to a two-sided submarine propelar (use you imagination a little). This two-sided wing thing drops strait down into the bowels of the carb itself. I did find what I presume to be the needle you are referring too, as it drops strait through the center of the entire rubber bushing/submarine propelar thing, and proceeds downward another couple inches or so I'd say. It is fairly long itself, has a large, flat head on it, but tapers down to a fine point at the other end, where it is the deepest inside the carb. I separated the spring/plastic claw thing from this, then lifted the needle out itself, but there are no clips anywhere-where are they? What exactly do you adjust?
I thought there was supposed to be a bunch of smaller rings around the needle itself thing, where the C-clips fit into, and to adjust it, you simply moved the C-clip up or down to compensate for the desired results-but again, where are they? I'm sorry, I hate to sound like a complete idiot here, but please, I AM A COMPLETE IDIOT HERE!!!
Also, there is a bunch of black sludge type stuff around the inside of the bowl there where I pulled the main rubber dish/propelar shaft out of, and especially some build-up down in the deep crevaces. What would cause this, and I'm assuming I should rinse it out with gasoline asap to clean it out good?.
Thank you very much for the help once again, very sorry you're dealing with such a dumb _ss! heh heh heh.

Sorry for the previous post! After my dealer got back from lunch, I talked to him explaining everything. He got the manual out, looked it over and said "no, it should look like this". I said well, no, I don't see any of that. He had the shop manual for the Manual 'Cat, not the auto, so he switched to the auto shop manual. Guess what-the Keihin CVK carb DOES NOT have an adjustable needle! I didn't screw up, didn't do anything wrong, and I'M NOT AN IDIOT AFTERALL! heh heh heh As usual, just worried about nothing again. So, apparhently the only way to adjust for lean or rich conditions is to swap out the main jet, or the pilot if need be. You can also adjust the air adjustment screw at the bottom of the carb, but other than that, there is NO needle adjustment, and consequently, no clips to raise or lower.
Again, sorry for the bother, thank you for the time,
Mike
