Is there a way i can take my front drive shaft off the whole thing. Because when it was put together the pinon arm was put outr backwards and it kicks on when its in 2 wheel drive and today it snaped my right side front shaft and am not fixin it again i dont use 4wd very often. i dont even use it with my bear claws and about how much weight would i lose by takin that off.

Thanks for any info

Wisky,
I'm gonna attempt to build a Scrambler 500 2x4 out of my 4x4 also..
WHY POLARIS DOESN'T DO IT.. I'LL NEVER KNOW!!!...
So far, from what I've found out... basically all you have to do is go buy the front strut holders and spindles for a Sport 400 (a TrailBlazer might fit!!)
Unbolt the front driveshaft from the transmission, unblot the front drive-case, and take it all out.. Replace it all with the transplanted front end pieces... and you're done...
If you really decide to do this, PLEASE get it weighed before you start and weigh it again afterwards.. I'm thinking with enough modifications, I can get down to close to 400 lbs...
Good Luck!!

OK first off your Scrambler weighs 542lbs(dry weight). Now, your 4 wheel drive system weighs approximately 40 lbs. That drops you to around 500 lbs. Now unless you pull out the engine and maybe even take your tires off, you aren't even going to come close to 400lbs. Thanks for your time.

The Scrambler 400 4x4 weighs 442 pounds, the Scrambler 4x2 weighs 401 pounds, i dont think that a different light and such is going ot make that big of difference, 40 pounds is what is weighs!!!

Ranger, DID ANYBODY KICK YOUR CAGE???

Whisky,
Anyway.. Yes, I believe its possible to get it down to around the 400 lb. mark WITHOUT the AWD system and making other modifications. Granted, its gonna take time, and money, and alot of fabrication (replacing parts with aluminum and carbon fiber counterparts) But, I believe it is possible.. It may end up requiring the aftermarket frame thats coming out, but, to begin with, you would have to be serious about professional racing to spend the coins... I'm gonna try it soon with my Scrambler anyway... (WITHOUT the use of an aftermarket frame..)
I believe the AWD system on your machine DOES weigh more than 40 lbs. I mean, you have a driveshaft made of solid steel, the left and right wheelshaft assemblies, the front "differential case" and both front hub assemblies...
Besides that stuff, you can/could lose the "sputter box", fan shroud, floorboards, racks(if on there now) skidplates,etc... My 97 model came with what I think are steel wheels, so I could replace those too with their aluminum counnterparts..
As for costs, that would all depend on what you could fabricate yourself, and what would have to be farmed out... I'm also thinking of upgrading my NON-H.O. 500 to the H.O. 500 specs so that I can take advantage of the aftermarket parts available.. Theres also a turbocharger available for the Polaris 500...

mudmachine-bring it.

Anybody that thinks they can make a quad that weighs 542lbs. lose 142 lbs. is just plain, well shall i say......not with it!!! first off the AWD system does weigh 40 pounds, where do you get that it doesnt? if the scrambler 400 4x4 weighs 442 pounds, and the 4x2 weighs 401 pounds, i think if you do the math it comes out to be a 40 lb difference. and considering that it is the same frame and motor you should know it weighs 40 pounds. If you replace parts with carbon fiber i think you are going to have one piece of sh*t machine, it would never hold up, NEVER!! The only way i think you could get down to 400 pounds would be to pull the wheels and engine out of that thing and then MAYBE you will be down there. my 3 cents
