We had a big ride yesterday and almost every atv there was a polaris! My Scrambler 500 is slightly modified so I wanted to see how a stock 500SC would compare. I jumped on it and I was amazed at the difference. My SC500 had way, way more bottom end torque and you could feel it very hard everytime you punched where as the stock 500 felt weak in comparsion, but top end (past 35mph)it would go faster. Now on the 00 SC400 4x2, it felt lighter when you jumped but that's it, the feel of the power sucked in comparsion to mine, it seemed quick but too smooth you just could not feel the power, for riding trails I would hate to have the two stroke. I felt like you had to wait for the power to kick in on the two stroke where as on the four stroke you would get instant power that you could feel, which is way better for the trails we ride. I am not trying to say they are bad by any means but what kind of riding is the two stroke better at??? Sand,mx and dirt roads??? I have been on the sport, 400 scramblers and sp400 and all of them feel the same way, it feels like you have to wait for it to kick in unlike the 500. Just wondering why somebody would pick a polaris 2 stroke over a 4 stroke?? The guys that have rode mine from riding their 2 stroke can't believe the difference, it's like they have never been on a 4 stroke THUMPER! PS I do love the banshee and 250r but it is totally different from Polaris' 2 stroke. Thank God I bought a Scrambler 500

Steve, I have heard the same thing from numerous riders that put a pipe on a 500, they gain lots of bottom end and lose on top.

How to get the most out of the FMF Megamax II ...It comes with 11 disks and a quite core. Take everything off the muffler. Put 6-7 diks against the muffler, the quite core next, then the remaining 4-5 disks, then the spark arrestor. This seems to be the best combination for strong bottom end torque, and still gives enough backpressure not to hurt (it doesn't help) the top end. It also still has that deep hard hitting thump that only a 500 owner could love. THe more you close the muffler, the more top end you get. If you reduce the first 6-7 disks to 4 or 5, you loose some of the sound, but regain the top end. Absolute best all aoround performance seems to be install quite core first, then all the disks. Very quick and more top end, but it sounds horrible. NOT worth the trade off. Just my 2 cents.

PS, Steve, been trying to get a hold of you, we need to make a trip to Gboro soon. Spent last week at Brown...loved it! Marie & I went and stayed in the cabins at Brown Mt Beech CG. Had a large time. Get in touch with me before the weekend. Would love to ride with you & Clay.

Jerome, I try to leave the quiet core out because of the tin, tin, tin sound it makes it slightly sound a bit 2 stroke, YUK I will try the discs then the core then the discs and see what happens. I need to take my Scrambler to the shop to get the major belt problem I am having repaired for good. It keeps breaking belts and it has been doing it since I got it! I don't think the belt aligned right or the deflection is wrong, hell I can't fix it, I can take everything else apart and fix it but not the belt, it makes me so mad. As soon as I get the belt fixed we will setup a ride, I have two great trails systems around here, I think I would like to take y'all down to the cliff top trails in Winston-Salem, there aren't as many extreme hill climbs that you have to go through, most of the trails are very easy and very fun. I haven't found the end of them yet, so you know there has got to be alot! Hopefully we can plan a ride not this weekend but next. I'll let you know,

Steve,

I would love to ride at your house again. I loved the hills, I think Marie was a little fed-up with them though by the end of the day. Let me know when you can ride & we'll plan a trip.

steve,
I have to admit, I have not ridden a 500 scrambler except once on a test ride at the dealership. I was not very impressed. At that time my 99 scrambler 400 only had an aftermarket (aaen) pipe on it, and my 400 felt like it had more pull especially in the mid to upper RPM. Since then i have had the head milled, installed a K&N filter, Delta V-force reeds, and new springs in the clutches. It really pulls hard now, from idle, clear through the RPM range. And will even pull a wheelie (not that i am any good at it!). In my opinion, the stock(or mostly stock) 500 probably will out perform a stock 400, but you can make the two-stroke run faster, easier and with less money.
