I think it is a nice saftey feature. I don't know how many times i almost backed into stuff with my honda because i just nailed it.

And the button is there if you need to go full speed in reverse!

When u get stuck and need to get off and push tha front end and give it gas at tha same time u will wish that override button wasnt there....My dad has a sportsman and i get to hold down tha button while he pushes on tha front and gives it gas....would be hard to do with only one person

I got an easy way to fix that button. Use a Zip tie to depress it and cover the Zip tie with duck tape so the Zip tie stays on.

I enjoy the overide button on Polaris's. It got me unstuck from some mud around a pond one day. I couldn't go forward and I couldn't get it out in 4wheel drive so I hit it and it took me right out. I am also unfamiliar with the overide. Does it have to be pushed before 4wd will work in reverse? Maybe that is the reason it wasn't working in 4wd. It only lights up when you press it so I guess it does.

The dreaded Override button..
I can understand why Polaris puts them on.. I'm sure it has to do with some liability issue. To keep the speed down in reverse. I bypass the override buttons simply because I ride mud ALL the time. If you get stuck and are trying to push it out in reverse. Without the override button pressed in, you wouldn't have AWD or full engine power.
I bypass it, but nobody else rides my machines, so I don't have to worry about somebody hurting themselves backing up and losing control.

Yes Bigbadcat, the override button has to be pushed for 4x4 to work in reverse. The 2 reasons why I don't like it is it's just a nuisance having to hit it everytime you want to back up at a decent pace or be able to back up going up a 2 degree slope with some gravel on it. It hurts your neck if you're trying to back up to hook something up to it and you have both hands on the handlebars! I don't know anyone that got fitted with an owl's neck, but I didn't!? On the Foreman I back up like a car, with one hand on the handlebar and looking back. A lot easier, and have full power and 4wd. The other reason is when snowplowing it sucks. After you're done pushing and you have to back up, you have to back up a little to lift the plow. Try hitting the throttle, hitting the override, and lifting the plow all at the same time! And if you don't hit the override button, forget about backing up because the back tires will just spin. I guess I would be satisfied if Polaris would just make the AWD work in reverse if the AWD button or switch is on, and the override wouldn't need to be hit. That would be fine then, plus raise the rpm limit a few hundred rpms.

I agree with you Rooster. It is a nuscance in 4wd. It should be push button but with reverse included. Now I don't mind it in 2wd because it will fly in reverse which can be dangerous at times. Two strokes are the most fun. I think someone needs to send a letter to the company telling them of this problem. I would but I don't own one.

another problem with the override is this: my scrambler has a stiffer than stock spring in the primary clutch and lighter weights, making the engagement at a higher RPM, in order to move AT ALL in reverse i have to depress the button. And sometimes when i ride in wet weather, the button fails to work! has anyone bypassed the button internally? how do you do it?

Scramblin,
Somewhere in the archives of this forum is a VERY detailed set of instructions for bypassing the override button on the new model machines.. On the older models, its just unplugging a few wires on the circut board.

I've also got a plow on my 99 Sportsman and a high performance clutch kit that engages at a higher rpm.So my plowing should be a real pain in the butt this winter.I did'nt have the kit last winter, but I agree,it still is a pain trying to lift the plow,go to reverse, and hit the overide button all around the same time. And yes,the overide button must be engaged before the 4wd will work.====BILL
