I'm assuming that 15 tooth is stock on a 300ex (just like a 400ex)...
By dropping teeth on the front sprocket- you will LOOSE top end- and gain bottom end. You'll notice more power on hill climbs and a little faster acceleration.
Also- if you ever put bigger tires on your rear- you will need to drop to a 13 tooth. The bigger tires will cancel out the low end gain you made with the 14 tooth.
...actually- you may want to even go to a 13 tooth now. If you think about it- how often do you ride in 4th and 5th gear? You really don't hit those gears. Most riding is done between 1-3rd. So with a 13t sprocket- you'll get alot of low end power!

i put a 14t on mine. the only difference i saw was a small increase in top end and it does not seem to whine out so fast in first gear. great mod for $20. you HAVE to remove the case saver. i just left mine out becasue i have not had the time to grind it down. if i were you, i would fix the case saver asap.

Hey rotgutbottom stock is 13. So by going up to 14 you would gain speed. The 300 also has stock 22inch tires so you can't really go any higher.

I put the 14 tooth sprocket on my '98 300EX that has a full White Bros. header/pipe, jet kit, K&N air filter, modified air box lid, the rev limiter removed from the CDI, and 22inch Holeshot XCT tires in the rear.
Now, I'm about 4 bike lengths behind my buddy with a modified 400EX at top speed (just pipe, jet kit, air box lid) whereas before I was about 12/14 bikes lengths behind him. In a drag race he doesn't pull away from me until I almost hit four gear. The rev limiter is also very restrictive on a 300EX, so my last two mods were the 14 tooth and CDI box -- they both made a big difference!!! I would say the 14 tooth is good for about 5 to 8 MPH on top end.
You do have to dump the case saver and you do lose a little off the bottom end (I noticed it is a little harder to start off from a stop in second gear), but otherwise well worth it!
